Noa is a young, socially awkward officer in the Israeli army. Despite having been deemed unfit to command by her superiors, unusual circumstances result in Noa being assigned a platoon to lead. The new recruits she has to guide through basic training are a notoriously unruly group of young women. Noa has to navigate her way between these difficult recruits and her superiors who refuse to accept her authority. We follow Noa as she sets off on her most important mission yet: to prove that she is worthy.

“What if women ruled the world?” Yael Bartana stages the question in her performative ‘Two Minutes to Midnight,’, where an all women government of a fictitious country must take a stand on an imminent nuclear threat from a foreign nation. A panel of fictional characters and real women experts in fields such as defence, law, politics and psychology is set in a democratic ‘Peace Room’, mirroring the toxically masculine ‘War Room’ in Stanley Kubrick’s classic Cold War satire, ‘Dr. Strangelove.’ The women are tasked with deciding how to approach the prescripted situation. Bartana’s visionary work is the synthesis of an interdisciplinary four-year process that analyses the geopolitical power game – and presents us with an alternative to the macho power discourse.

The footage emerged from the recordings of the hybrid-experimental live performance What if Women Ruled the World? in Aarhus and Berlin (2017 and 2018) And the performance “Bury Our Weapons not Our Bodies” (Philadelphia 2019).

Malka Germania, commissioned by the Jewish Museum Berlin, investigates the longing for collective redemption as a response to an age of anxiety. Malka Germania is Hebrew for “Queen Germania.” The name makes reference to an unusual female designation for the Messiah: “Malka Meshichah,” or the “Annointed Queen.” The Messiah has come to Berlin and thus to the historic epicenter of Jewish, Israeli, and German collective memory. Instead of experiencing immediate redemption, the city is haunted by its residents’ collective subconscious: their dreams, fears, and memories. The work investigates the longing for collective redemption as a response to an age of anxiety. The piece portrays subconscious elements, gray areas, and ambiguities of contemporary German-Jewish experience through the artistic medium. At the same time, it attempts to disrupt a fixed iconography and to deconstruct identities - the past and future implode into an alternative present.
